Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetics that replace missing teeth. They consist of durable materials like nylon, plastic, or acrylic and rest comfortably on top of your gums. Custom dentures offer a variety of benefits, including improved oral health, easier biting and chewing, and a vibrant smile.

What are the types of dentures?

Urrutia Family Dental offers several types of dentures, including:

Full dentures

Full dentures replace all of your teeth. They have a horseshoe-shaped base plate, pink plastic gums, and a complete row of artificial teeth. To prevent your dentures from moving out of position, you apply an adhesive to the bottom.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace only a few of your teeth. These dentures look similar to a retainer in that they have a wireframe that attaches to small metal clasps. There are several types of partial dentures, including cast metal partials and flexible partials.

Implant-retained dentures

Implant-retained dentures attach to dental implants, synthetic tooth roots that a dental specialist places into your jaw during oral surgery. Over time, the implants integrate with your natural bone structure, providing a supportive base for dental restorations like dentures. With good oral hygiene and routine dental checkups, implant-retained dentures often last a lifetime.

What type of denture is right for me?

To determine the type of denture that is right for you, your Urrutia Family Dental provider asks about your goals for treatment and conducts an oral exam.

If you’re only missing a few of your teeth, you might benefit from partial dentures. If you’re missing most or all of your teeth, you might benefit from complete or implant-retained dentures.

After gathering the necessary information and determining your budget, your provider develops a custom treatment plan that aligns with your needs.

Do I need to care for my dentures?

It’s important to care for your dentures like you would your natural teeth. If you have complete or partial dentures, Urrutia Family Dental recommends brushing your dentures daily and soaking them in an FDA-approved cleaning solution at night.

If you have implant-retained dentures, brush them daily and visit Urrutia Family Dental every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
